Children are affected by addiction in many ways, either directly (when a child’s mother abuses drugs or alcohol when pregnant, which can result in physical and cognitive defects) or indirectly (when a family members suffers from addiction).
Choices about alcohol are never made in isolation. Making a decision whether to drink and how much to drink affects family members, employers, and friends. When drinking behaviors extend to secondary decisions related to drinking, such as whether to drive after drinking, the impact reaches even more people.

More than 1 million children in the UK are living with parents who abuse alcohol and need urgent support, the charity group Turning Point has said, explaining that a lack of specialist services means youngsters are forced to carry the burden of the "family secret" alone.
