Texas County to Post Names of Arrested Drunk Drivers on Twitter

If you get arrested for drinking and driving this week in Montgomery County, Texas, your name may end up on Twitter.

Computer World reported that the district attorney’s office of Montgomery County has decided to post the names of those charged with driving while intoxicated between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

“There is definitely a deterrent effect in the potential public humiliation people may face when they get arrested for DWI,” assistant district attorney Warren Diepraam, who came up with the idea of posting the arrests on Twitter, told MyFox Houston. The names will be posted to District Attorney Brett Ligon’s Twitter page. So far no names or arrests have been posted to the page.

One Houston lawyer doesn’t think the public postings are a good idea. Attorney Paul B. Kennedy wrote on his blog, “Should the DA dismiss a case against a motorist or should a motorist be acquitted by a jury of his peers, will Mr. Diepraam offer a public apology on Twitter as well?”

CNET noted that the city of Denton, Texas, posts all arrests to their Twitter page and also posts mug shots on the site.
