Stop Drunk Driving Now, a New England drunk driving awareness campaign, has partnered with Boston-based Illumina Records to recruit 30 teens from Vermont and across the region to make an album to contribute to the national fight against drunk driving deaths.
Stop Drunk Driving Now is asking musicians 18 or younger to submit an original song for the chance to be selected as one of the artist featured on recording a free online download.
The mission is by teens and for teens—an effort titled "Kids Saving Kids"—to stop teenage drunk driving through musical messages about the brutal costs of the behavior, according to Nicole Van Eden, director of publicity for Stop Drunk Driving Now.
"Vermont has a great music scene and we would like to give your kids the opportunity to submit music to us for the chance to be promoted nationally, as well as use their talents to save lives and make a difference," Van Eden wrote in an e-mail Thursday.
John D’Esposito, Vermont’s Students Against Drunk Driving advisor for the last nine years and an instructor at Rutland’s Stafford Technical Center, likened the CD project to another arrow that he hopes hits teens.
"There is no one way (to deter teens from drunk driving)," he said. "All the research says you have to have a complete program that includes education, enforcement and changing community norms."
D’Esposito said, "fewer people do it because it’s socially unacceptable and the likelihood of being prosecuted for it is much greater than it used to be … cops don’t drive you home anymore and everybody recognizes that."
To submit an original song for consideration, submit an mp3 or a WAV file to ksksubmit@stopddnow.com.
Stop Drunk Driving Now is also asking teens to include their age, hometown, and parental contact information.
