A report this week from Health Day News stated that alcohol use is up as well as illnesses and deaths associated with heavy consumption. They stated that one in twenty-five deaths can be attributed to alcohol. Globally, the average amount each person drinks is about 1.6 gallons per year. That means on average people are drinking 4 alcoholic drinks a week.
When you think about how many people do not drink at all, especially in countries with prohibitions against alcohol (45% of men and 55% of women do not drink at all), the amount drinkers consumes jumps even higher.
The study also found:
- Europeans show the highest consumption – 3.1 gallons a year.
- Men consume more alcohol than women
- Women in high-income countries consuming more than in low-income countries
- Europe had the highest rate of alcohol-related deaths (10%)
- Deaths attributed to alcohol have increased since 2000
- Young adults have the highest incidence of alcohol-associated illnesses
